IGAD Regulatory Authorities Convene in Addis Ababa to Strengthen Regional Harmonization
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia โ May/14/25 โ Heads of National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) from IGAD member states convened in Addis Ababa to advance regulatory harmonization across the region. The meeting was officially opened by Heran Gerba, Director General of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), who emphasized the need for joint action to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of medical products.
In her address, Heran Gerba highlighted the achievements of previous collaborative efforts, including joint dossier evaluations, GMP inspections, and post-marketing surveillance. She also called for greater investment in capacity building and alignment with continental initiatives such as the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
Dr. Abebaw Bihonegn, IGAD Head of Mission to Ethiopia, also addressed the gathering, stating that regional collaboration is essential to combating the circulation of illegal medicines. He stressed the importance of working together to ensure the quality, efficacy, and safety of medical products across member states.
The meeting marks a significant step forward in reinforcing regulatory convergence, safeguarding public health, and strengthening the regional medicine regulatory framework.
