EFDA Launches Training to Implement New Pharmacy Standards and Control Substandard Medicines
Addis Ababa– May 22, 2025 – The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) has launched a trainer of trainers (ToT) program aimed at standardizing pharmacy practices and combating substandard and falsified medicines across the country.
The training, which commenced today, is being provided to inspectors from the Oromia and Central Ethiopia regions. It covers key topics such as “Regulatory Compliance and Service Delivery Based on National Pharmacy Standards” and “Identification, Prevention, and Action Against Substandard and Falsified Medicines.”
Mr. Wendu Ketele, Executive Officer of the EFDA Branch Coordination Office, emphasized the critical need for uniform regulation during the opening ceremony. “Substandard and falsified medicines pose a severe threat to patient safety and public health,” he stated. “Addressing this issue requires robust national standards and collaborative efforts with regional regulators.” He noted that inspectors from 12 regional regulatory bodies have already completed similar training, with Oromia and Central Ethiopia participating in this current round. The training is designed to equip participants with the knowledge to further train zonal and woreda-level inspectors in their respective regions.
Mr. Solomon Amde, Executive Officer of EFDA’s Human Resources and Development, urged participants to leverage the acquired knowledge to enhance their regions’ regulatory capacity. He affirmed the authority’s commitment to providing regional regulatory bodies with the necessary training to bring about meaningful change.
