Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority Bolsters Milk Safety with Advanced Technology and Training
Adama, Ethiopia – May 27, 2025 – The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) today announced a significant escalation of its efforts to ensure the safety and quality of milk products across the nation. Leveraging modern technology and comprehensive training programs, the initiative aims to fortify the regulatory framework, guaranteeing that consumers receive healthy and safe dairy products.
Ato Negash Sime, Deputy Director General of the EFDA’s Food Sector, highlighted the authority’s commitment to modernizing its control systems. “We are actively enhancing our oversight to ensure milk products reach consumers in optimal health conditions,” stated Ato Negash. A cornerstone of this modernization is the widespread implementation of Lactoscan, a state-of-the-art device for precise milk quality assessment. To maximize its effectiveness, the EFDA is conducting extensive training for inspectors at all administrative levels, from federal to district, thereby addressing existing knowledge gaps in milk safety control.
During the opening of the training program, Ato Negash underscored the critical importance of a collaborative approach in safeguarding milk safety. He emphasized the ongoing strategic coordination with key partners, including the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration and the Agriculture Authority, alongside other vital stakeholders. “The role of all stakeholders is paramount in the milk safety control process, spanning from the farm to the consumer’s table,” Ato Negash stressed. He also issued a clear call to milk producers, urging them to prioritize the acquisition and delivery of healthy products to consumers.
Participants in the training and all involved stakeholders were urged to strengthen their collaborative initiatives to ensure the continued safety of milk products. Reinforcing this commitment, Ato Melaku Debela of SNV Ethiopia commended the EFDA’s proactive efforts in milk safety and reaffirmed SNV Ethiopia’s steadfast commitment to bolstering its partnership with the authority.
The EFDA’s intensified efforts mark a significant step forward in upholding public health standards and building greater consumer confidence in the Ethiopian dairy industry.
