World Food Safety Day is being celebrated under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action” through a series of events aimed at raising public awareness about food safety.
On June 7, 2025, in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority, the Ethiopian Standards Institute, and international partners, commemorated the day by presenting and discussing scientific research on food safety practices.
Heran Gerba, Director-General of the EFDA, officially opened the forum, emphasizing that this yearโs theme underscores the vital role of science in safeguarding food safety. She urged the government, businesses, and consumers to consistently apply scientific principles to fulfill their food safety responsibilities.
“Science is at the heart of food safety,” the Director-General stated. “It helps us understand foodborne hazards and guides us in preventing diseases.”
She noted that World Food Safety Day, observed globally every June 7, promotes scientific knowledge as a cornerstone for reducing illness, cutting costs, and saving lives. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of evidence-based decision-making in food safety policies.
Representatives from the Agricultural Authority and the World Food Programme also delivered remarks during the event. This year marks the seventh global observance of World Food Safety Day and Ethiopiaโs sixth, featuring research presentations and panel discussions.
