๐๐ณ๐ฃ๐ข ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ค๐ฉ, ๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฆ 24, 2025 โ The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority has officially inaugurated a new medicine Safety Monitoring and Coordination Center at the Arba Minch University comprehensive and teaching specialized hospital. This initiative is set to significantly bolster the nation’s efforts in ensuring medicine safety.
Mr. Getachew Genete, Lead Executive for medicine Manufacturers Inspection and Law Enforcement at the EFDA, underscored the critical importance of public and healthcare professional participation in monitoring adverse drug reactions, given the potential for medications to cause harmful side effects. He further elaborated on the EFDA’s strategy, mandated by its proclamation, to coordinate and oversee drug safety activities. Specifically, he noted that the Authority is establishing pharmacovigilance centers by engaging key stakeholders and selecting university institutions to enhance accessibility. The center at Arba Minch University Hospital marks the eighth such facility.
Dr. Desta Galcha, CED of Arba Minch University Teaching and Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, expressed profound honor that their hospital was chosen to host the center, emphasizing the significant opportunity it presents for the health of the regional community.
The EFDA has provided technical support and orientation to the newly established center. The inauguration ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, including Mr. Mekonnen Toncha, Deputy Administrator of Gamo zone, alongside officials from the EFDA, Arba Minch Hospital, and the Zonal Health Office.
