EFDA Provides Training for Private Hospital and Kenema Pharmacists
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – May 25, 2025 – The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) successfully completed a three-day training program on Pharmacovigilance and Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) from May 21-23. The initiative aimed to enhance medicine safety reporting and response capabilities within Ethiopia’s private healthcare sector.
The training engaged Healthcare professionals from private general hospitals and Kenema pharmacies, addressing a recognized gap in drug safety education for these institutions. “This initiative fills a gap we’ve long noticed in the private sector,” stated Mr. Teshita Shute, representative of the Pharmacovigilance and Clinical Trial Lead Executive Office and Head of Medicine Safety and Post Marketing Surveillance Desk at EFDA. ” Private hospitals haven’t always had access to the same level of training on drug safety as public institutions. So, we created this program specifically to support and include them in our national effort.”
This session marks the first in a series of planned trainings. Mr. Teshita affirmed, “We’re committed to rolling out similar sessions in other regions across Ethiopia to ensure that all private healthcare providers, regardless of location, are empowered with the knowledge and tools to protect patient safety.”
Participants collaborated with EFDA experts to develop actionable plans for their workplaces, ensuring practical implementation of learned concepts. The EFDA anticipates that these trained Healthcare professionals will disseminate their knowledge to colleagues and fostering a culture of vigilance.
By empowering private healthcare professionals, the EFDA reinforces its dedication to a safer health products and health system for all Ethiopians, underscoring patient safety as a shared responsibility across the entire healthcare sector.
